HC Deb 20 November 1893 vol 18 cc1265-6
MR. CAINE

I beg to ask the Under Secretary of State for India what quantity of cinchona, in the bulk of all preparations, has been sold by the Superintendent of the Botanic Gardens, Calcutta, each year from 1886 to 1892; and what has been the average price for the year?

MR. GEORGE RUSSELL

I shall be glad to hand my hon. Friend a detailed statement for the seven years. In 1892–3, 5,520 lbs. of quinine, and 3,650 lbs. of cinchona febrifuge were sold from the factory near Darjeeling to the medical department and to the public, at a price of one rupee an ounce for quinine and 10 annas an ounce for cinchona febrifuge.
