HC Deb 04 May 1893 vol 12 c49
MR. T. W. RUSSELL (Tyrone, S.)

I beg to ask the Chief Secretary to the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland whether he is aware that Mr. J. A. Smith, of Brookboro', County Fermanagh, after being sworn before Mr. Molony, R.M., at New-town Butler on the 3rd inst., with uplifted hand, was asked whether he held that form of oath binding on his conscience; and if there is any legal warrant for asking members of the Presbyterian Church such a question?

*MR. J. MORLEY

I am informed that the Resident Magistrate did make this inquiry, which I understand is not unusual in Courts of Justice in Ireland. There is, of course, no legal warrant for putting the question, and the Resident Magistrate's attention has been drawn to the matter.
