HC Deb 28 February 1893 vol 9 c559
SIR HENRY ROSCOE (Manchester, S.)

I beg to ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether his attention has been directed to a new modification of the Ashworth - Hepplethwaite - Gray safety lamp for coal miners, invented by Professor Clowes of the Nottingham University College, by means of which the presence of traces of fire damp hitherto incapable of detection can be estimated; and whether, in view of the great importance of this discovery as tending to diminish the risks to human life attending the getting of coal, he will instruct Her Majesty's Chief Inspector of Coal Mines to have this new lamp thoroughly tested, and if found to be successful, he will see that it is introduced into general use by firemen and others engaged in testing the air of coal mines?

MR. ASQUITH

Yes, my attention has been called to the safety lamp invented by Professor Clowes; it has been referred to the Mines Inspectors, and is at present under investigation by them.
