HC Deb 15 December 1893 vol 19 c1488
MR. HOPWOOD

I beg to ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether his attention has been called to the large amount of flogging ordered by sentence at the recent Assizes for Liverpool; whether this duty will be or has been performed by the warders of one gaol only, Her Majesty's Prison at Walton; and whether any extra remuneration is given for this duty, or any regard paid to the objection any warder may feel to perform it?

THE ATTORNEY GENERAL (Sir C. RUSSELL, Hackney, S.)

My right hon. Friend the Home Secretary, being engaged elsewhere, has asked me to answer this question. It appears, he said, that 12 sentences of flogging were pronounced, of which only one has yet been executed. The punishment will be inflicted by the warder of the prison in which the; prisoners are confined. This will be the Walton Prison. Special remuneration is given for this duty, and there has never been any difficulty in finding officers willing to perform it.
