HC Deb 07 December 1893 vol 19 c650
MR. WINGFIELD-DIGBY (Dorset, N.)

I beg to ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether it is in accordance with his instructions, or any instructions from his Department, that the Surveyors of Taxes are trying to increase existing assessments to the Inhabited House Duty in this time of depression in trade and agriculture?

SIR W. HARCOURT

No instructions have been issued by me or by the Inland Revenue on this subject. Assessments to the Inhabited House Duty are not made by Surveyors of Taxes, but by the Local Commissioners, over whom I have no authority in such matters.
