HC Deb 18 August 1893 vol 16 c518
SIR C. W. DILKE

I beg to ask the Under Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, in reference to the statement in The Times of Thursday, 17th August, that a French diplomatist of high standing has been sent to Bangkok to ask for a grant of land in connection with a French scheme for making a canal through the Malay Peninsula, whether there exist any Papers which can be laid before Parliament on the difficulties in the way of the continuation of such a canal?

SIR E. GREY

Her Majesty's Government were informed on the 18th of July that M. Myre de Vilers was being sent to Bangkok; but it is not known that his mission is in any way connected with such a scheme as that mentioned in the question. I must ask the right hon. Baronet to postpone the last part of his question till there has been time to examine the Papers.
