MR. GRANTLAWSON (York, N. R., Thirsk)I bog to ask the President of the Local Government Board whether it is intended to continue to pay to those County Councils who have not devoted to Technical Education the whole fund paid to them on account of the Local Taxation (Customs and Excise) Grant, the full amount of such grant?
§ THE PRESIDENT OF THE LOCAL GOVERNMENT BOARD (Mr. H. H. FOWLER,) Wolverhampton, E.Under the Local Taxation Act, 1890, it is not at present compulsory on a County Council to apply the moneys received by them 1138 under that Act to purposes of the Technical Instruction Act. I am glad to say that a very large proportion of the counties and county boroughs have applied the whole sums received from those duties to technical and intermediate education. I have no authority to withhold any moneys payable under the Act of 1890 on the ground suggested.
MR. GRANT LAWSONDo I understand the right hon. Gentleman to say the money will be paid this year to counties which have not expended anything on technical education?
§ MR. H. H. FOWLERI am sorry to say it will.
