HC Deb 10 April 1893 vol 10 c1816
MR. AMBROSE (Middlesex, Harrow)

I beg to ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he is aware that the refusal of Her Majesty's Customs to allow a drawback of the duty which is required to be paid on entry of spirit used for making methylated spirit, when such methylated spirit is exported, drives the export trade in this article to Foreign ports; and will he provide in the forthcoming Budget for the repayment of such duty when methylated spirits are exported?

THE CHANCELLOR OF THE EXCHEQUER (Sir W. HARCOURT,) Derby

I am afraid I can give the hon. Gentleman no information as to the provisions of the forthcoming Budget.

MR. AMBROSE

The right hon. Gentleman has not answered the first part of the question, with respect to the drawback and the effect on the export trade of the refusal to allow it.

SIR W. HARCOURT

The matter was carefully examined into by my predecessor, and he did not find it possible to alter the existing rules.
