HC Deb 01 April 1892 vol 3 c469
MR. H. CAMPBELL (Fermanagh, S.)

I beg to ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department if it is true that during last year 66 women were either released from prison or had their sentences reduced in view of their approaching confinement?

MR. MATTHEWS

During the last financial year for which there are statistics the number of women who were released before the expiration of their sentences on account of advanced pregnancy was, not 66, but twelve. In these cases the probable date of the confinement was such that, if it had been allowed to take place in prison, the women would have had to remain there after the expiration of the sentence.
