HC Deb 23 June 1891 vol 354 cc1207-8
SIR J. KENNAWAY (Devon, Honiton)

I beg to ask the Secretary to the Treasury whether if information is given to him that there is reasonable grounds to suspect that certain parcels of goods, imported as pure butter, are adulterated with fat or margarine, he would cause samples to be taken with the view of detecting and punishing the fraud?

THE SECRETARY TO THE TREASURY (Mr. JACKSON,) Leeds, N.

In answer to my hon. Friend, I have to say I am confident that the Commissioners of Customs will be glad to take any steps in their power to prevent the fraudulent importation of adulterated butter, and if information such as the hon. Baronet refers to is furnished to them the Commissioners will be prepared to direct their officers to take samples of the suspected goods.
