HC Deb 05 February 1891 vol 350 c12
SIR JOHN COLOMB (Tower Hamlets, Bow)

I beg to ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether the inquiry by him into the Customs Out-Door Department is concluded; and, if so, whether he can state how soon the decisions arrived at are likely to be made known?

MR. GOSCHEN

Yes, Sir. I have practically concluded the inquiry, and I am now engaged upon a Minute dealing with its results, which I hope to issue before long. I may say that the inquiry has been very protracted, owing to my desire to examine thoroughly the very numerous and difficult questions connected with the complicated organisation of a large service dispersed throughout the United Kingdom, and presenting many local differences of remuneration and conditions of work.
