HC Deb 05 December 1890 vol 349 cc663-4
MR. GURDON (Norfolk, Mid)

I beg to ask the Postmaster General whether his attention has been called to the number of advertisements of lotteries from Ireland, as well as abroad, which are being sent to our National schools; and whether he can prevent this practice?

MR. RAIKES

My attention has been called to the transmission of advertisements of lotteries through the Post both from Ireland and abroad, but the Law does not, I am advised, empower me to ascertain the contents of closed packets which may contain such advertisements. As regards notices of this description conveyed in open covers, I am considering what course of action should and can be taken.
