HC Deb 08 August 1890 vol 348 c259
DR. FARQUHARSON

I beg to ask the Postmaster General whether any steps are being taken to redress the grievances complained of by the clerks of the Central Telegraph Office as to the extra hours without equitable remuneration for what are known as long and short duties?

SIR HERBERT MAXWELL

In reply to the hon. Member I have to state that much attention has been given to the duties referred to with every desire to lighten their incidence, but no one, either on the part of the Post Office or on the part of the officers themselves, has been able to suggest any practicable scheme for getting rid of these duties. This matter formed an element of consideration in improving the pay under the scheme recently issued.
