HC Deb 29 March 1889 vol 334 c1166
MR. GILL (Louth, S.)

I beg to ask whether it is not a fact that Father Clarke, after having written a joint letter with Father Farrelly intimating his readiness to be arrested, had publicly celebrated Mass?

MR. A. J. BALFOUR

I have already given a detailed answer in regard to the circumstances of Father Clarke's arrest.

MR. GILL

The assertion that he had been avoiding arrest is a reflection upon his conduct and the honour of a clergyman.

MR. A. J. BALFOUR

I must again refer the hon. Member to my answer to a previous question.

MR. GILL

The answer of the Chief Secretary was to the effect that Father Clarke, having intimated his readiness to be arrested, had practically avoided arrest, and consequently the police had been compelled to execute the warrant for his arrest.

MR. A. J. BALFOUR

If the hon. Member will refer to my answer, he will see my reasons for it.
