HC Deb 28 June 1889 vol 337 cc1003-4
SIR ROPER LETHBRIDGE (Kensington, N.)

I beg to ask the Under Secretary of State for India whether the attention of Her Majesty's Government has been drawn to the munificent contribution made by the Maharajah of Darbhanga towards the initial expenses of famine relief in the district of Darbhanga and the province of Behar; and, whether the Government of India will sanction the construction of a railway, as a famine relief work, from the town of Darbhanga to Sitamarhi?

* THE UNDER SECRETARY OF STATE FOR INDIA (Sir J. GORST,) Chatham

No official Report of the munificent contribution by the Maharajah of Darbhanga has been made to the Secretary of State. The railway in the direction indicated in the question has for some time been in contemplation, but nothing has been definitely settled.
