HC Deb 02 July 1889 vol 337 cc1264-5
MR. PICKERSGILL (Bethnal Green, S.W.)

I beg to ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether a superannuated assistant secretary, who is drawing a full pension, is also borne on the Estimates of the Inland Revenue Department for an allowance of £150 per annum (active pay), as "Clerk to, Commissioners of Income Tax?"

THE CHANCELLOR OF THE EXCHEQUER (Mr. GOSCHEN,) St. George's, Hanover Square

The gentleman in question formerly held two distinct appointments as Assistant Secretary and as Clerk to Commissioners of Income Tax. He was superannuated in respect of the former, not in respect of the latter, and the pension he draws is only in respect of the former. His continuance in the latter post is due to the fact that it was not considered desirable to make a fresh appointment, which would involve a further claim to pension, and which circumstances might subsequently render unnecessary.
