HC Deb 02 August 1889 vol 339 c182
MR. THOMAS ELLIS

I beg to ask the Vice President of the Committee of Council on Education whether, in view of the fact that the education of the majority of the children in the parish of Llangar, County of Merioneth, has for over two years been carried on by voluntary effort, and without superintendence or inspection by the Education Department, and that a new school has been built by the parishioners in accordance with plans submitted to and sanctioned by the Education Department, he will reconsider his decision and allow the School Board to take over the new school and recognise it as a public elementary school?

* THE VICE PRESIDENT OF THE COUNCIL (Sir W. HART DYKE, Kent, Dartford)

The Education Department were unable to recognise the voluntary effort referred to during the last two years, as the education of the children was carried on in a room unfit for the purpose, but the promoters of the new building have been told that they should make their application for annual grant when the school is opened, with a certificated teacher. This they have not yet done, but should the application be made it would be the duty of the Department to refer it to the School Board in the usual course.
