HC Deb 08 November 1888 vol 330 c642
BARON DIMSDALE(for Sir ROBERT FOWLER) (London)

asked the Under Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Whether the attention of the Government has been called to the case of Miss Sterling, an officer of the Salvation Army, who has been sentenced to 100 days' imprisonment for conducting a children's service; and, whether the Secretary of State will make representations to the Swiss Government on the subject?

THE UNDER SECRETARY OF STATE (Sir JAMES FERGUSSON) Manchester, N.E.)

Her Majesty's Chargé d'Affaires is doing all that he can properly do in the circumstances of her case, and Miss Sterling's relations appear to be satisfied of this. We are informed that it is not the case that she received sentence of imprisonment for holding a children's service, but for holding public meetings, and for other acts, in violation of the law of the Canton.
