§ MR. PINKERTON (Galway)asked the Chief Secretary to the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, If he is aware that several communications have been sent from the occupiers of flooded lands bordering on Lough Corrib to the Board of Works, pointing out the defective nature of the drainage and the neglect of the Trustees to maintain the main drains in proper order; whether complaints have reached him as to the way in which the engineer sent down in September last discharged his duty as Inspector; whether he is aware that formal objections have been sent by the taxpayers to the Board of Works complaining that the inspection was imperfect, as the Inspector had passed down the main river in a boat, paying no attention to the siltage in the river or examining the flooded state of the crops, and that since October 24, when a letter was received from the Secretary promising to submit the matter to the consideration of the Board, no other communication has been received, nor have any steps been taken to remove the griev- 1692 ance; and, if, under these circumstances, he will see his way to include Lough Corrib district in the drainage scheme he is about to introduce?
§ THE SECRETARY TO THE TREASURY (Mr. JACKSON) (Leeds, N.)(who replied) said: In consequence of complaints as to the state of the drainage works an inspection was ordered, and was carefully carried out, after consultation with the petitioners, by an experienced officer. Complaints of the mode of inspection have been examined, and found to be groundless. As the result of the inspection the Trustees of the district were served with a notice calling upon them to execute the needful works before the 21st of July next, and the works are now in progress.
