HC Deb 04 June 1888 vol 326 cc1013-4
MR. GOURLEY (Sunderland)

asked the Under Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Whether the Government are aware that the President of Venezuela has recently published an official map for 1887, claiming the whole of British Guiana, west of the Essequibo River, as forming part of the United States of Venezuela; and, if so, what steps the Government propose to take in the matter?

THE UNDER SECRETARY OF STATE (Sir JAMES FERGUSSON) (Manchester, N.E.)

Her Majesty's Government are aware that such a map has been published; but a map does not confer any title to the territory; and it is not necessary, therefore, that Her Majesty's Government should take any action.
