HC Deb 03 August 1888 vol 329 cc1403-4
MR. HAYDEN (Leitrim, S.)

asked the Secretary of State for War, Whether there are several Militia Battalions in England and Ireland without Sergeants Major; and, whether he intends to take any steps regarding the appointment of Sergeants Major, Paymaster Sergeants, and Orderly Room Clerks, or whether he intends to abolish any of these offices?

THE SECRETARY OF STATE (Mr. E. STANHOPE) (Lincolnshire, Horncastle)

The question of the status of Sergeants Major, Paymaster Sergeants, and Orderly Room Clerks in Militia Battalions is at present under consideration. Meanwhile vacancies are only filled by acting appointments. I may add that these positions have to be regarded with reference to the corresponding duties in the Regimental District.
