§ THE CHANCELLOR OF THE EXCHEQUER (Mr. GOSCHEN) (St. George's, Hanover Square), in reply, said, he thought it was a Question which should he directed to the Under Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs. He believed that some representations had been received.

Perhaps the Question would be more properly answered when the clause of the Bill dealing with the Wine Duty is under discussion. But I can tell the hon. Member that a remonstrance has been addressed to Her Majesty's Government by the French Ambassador, pointing out, in temperate and moderate language, that the proposed duties will inflict an injury upon an article of French import.
