§ MR. DIXON-HARTLAND (Middlesex, Uxbridge)asked Mr. Chancellor of the Exchequer, What steps he proposes to take in order to secure to the taxpayer the full benefit of the reduction about to be effected on the charge for the National Debt?
THE CHANCELLOR OF THE EXCHEQUER (Mr. GOSCHEN) (St. George's, Hanover Square)Whatever proposals I may ultimately make to the House as to the disposal of the sum saved by the reduction of the interest on the National Debt, the taxpayer will have the benefit of them, either in reduction of the National Debt or in some other way. But I am not prepared to pledge myself as to the disposal of the sum at present.
