HC Deb 13 April 1888 vol 324 cc1180-1
MR. LAWSON (St. Pancras, W.)

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department, Whether the police constables on duty at the National Gallery, the British Museum, and other buildings are in receipt of 1s. a-day above their regular salary; whether the police constables on night watch in this House are in the same position as those on day duty; and, whether the Chief Commissioner's new Regulation is to apply to all alike; and, if not, would he explain the reason?

THE SECRETARY OF STATE (Mr. MATTHEWS) (Birmingham, E.)

The answer to the first paragraph is in the affirmative. The police constables on night duty in this House are in the same position as those on day duty only as regards pay. Their duties are special and peculiar, having reference to the safety of the buildings. They are also paid on a different Vote—namely, that of the Office of Works. The new Regulation applies to all alike, in so far as the Commissioner may consider desirable.
