HC Deb 29 July 1887 vol 318 cc534-5
MR. J. E. ELLIS (Nottingham, Rushcliffe)

asked the First Commissioner of Works, What steps have been taken to carry out the recommendation of the Select Committee on the Ventilation of the House, contained in the following paragraph of their Report, dated 31st May, 1886:— The Committee desire to draw attention to the fact that no single authority is responsible for the sanitation of the building ‥ … And the Committee desire to express their opinion that all the arrangements having a bearing on the sanitary state of the building should be placed in the hands of one Central Authority, who should be responsible to Parliament for every detail?

THE FIRST COMMISSIONER (Mr. PLUNKET) (Dublin University)

I have carefully considered the paragraph of the Report referred to by the hon. Member; but I cannot see my way to any considerable change in the present distribution of authority. The various officers who manage the heating, lighting, drainage, and all the more important matters connected with the ventilation of the Palace are responsible to the First Commissioner, who is directly responsible to Parliament.
