HC Deb 08 March 1886 vol 303 cc122-3
MR. H. GARDNER (Essex, Saffron Walden)

asked the First Lord of the Treasury, Whether Her Majesty's Government intend, this Session, to bring forward any measure for the purpose of legalising Marriage with a Deceased Wife's Sister?

THE CHANCELLOR OF THE EXCHEQUER (Sir WILLIAM HARCOURT) (Derby)

(who replied) said: My right hon. Friend has asked me to answer this Question. It is one that has been for many years in the hands of private Members, and I do not know that it would derive any particular advantage from its being taken up by the Government. My hon. Friend is aware that all the Members on this Bench, and most of those on this side of the House, have supported it. The Government are not inclined to increase and extend their engagements with regard to Bills for which they are responsible.
