HC Deb 24 August 1886 vol 308 c375
SIR ROPER LETHBRIDGE (Kensington, N.)

asked the Under Secretary of State for India, Whether the attention of Her Majesty's Government has been drawn to the great public meetings held at Calcutta, Lahore, and other places in India, to protest against the annual migration of Indian Governments to hill stations, and whether any action will be taken by the Government of India to meet the wishes of the people of India, both Native and European, on this subject; and, whether he is aware that a Return was ordered by this House on 30th July 1884, showing the cost of the annual migration, and whether that Return has ever been printed?

THE UNDER SECRETARY OF STATE (Sir JOHN GORST) (Chatham)

Her Majesty's Government have received no official information respecting the public meetings held at Calcutta and other places in India to protest against the annual migration of the Indian Governments to hill stations; nor have they received any intimation of the views and intentions of the Government of India relating thereto. I am aware that a Return, showing the cost of the annual migration, was ordered by the House of Commons on July 30, 1884. That Return was made on July 5, 1885; but the House has not yet ordered it to be printed.

SIR ROPER LETHBRIDGE

gave Notice that, in consequence of the answer given by the hon. and learned Gentleman, he should move that the Return in Question be printed.
