HC Deb 13 April 1886 vol 304 c1433
MR. SHIRLEY (Yorkshire, W.R., Doncaster)

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department, Whether it is the fact, as stated at the Warwickshire Quarter Sessions last week, that the Government have arrived at the decision that they will not in future offer rewards for the detection and apprehension of murderers and other felons?

THE SECRETARY OF STATE (Mr. CHILDERS) (Edinburgh, S.)

I have to inform my hon. Friend that the question of the expediency of the offer of rewards by Government was most carefully considered by my Predecessors at the Home Office. Experience having shown that the rewards had failed in obtaining their object, the decision arrived at was that the system should be practically discontinued. The rule is not absolute, but it would only be departed from under the most exceptional circumstances.
