HC Deb 02 March 1885 vol 294 cc1759-60
MR. ARTHUR O'CONNOR

asked the Chief Secretary to the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, with reference to the promise given by the late Chief Secretary on the 16th June last, Whether the Prisons Board have yet made arrangements for increasing the number of Ca- tholic officials in Maryborough Gaol; and, whether the Board still keep seven local warders employed entirely over invalid convicts and withhold from them convict warders' pay?

MR. CAMPBELL-BANNERMAN

Since my Predecessor gave the answer referred to, there have been added to the staff of Maryborough Prison a hospital warder, who is a Roman Catholic, and two second class warders also Roman Catholics. The internal permanent staff of the prison (including the Governor and the medical officer) now number 21, of whom two-thirds are Roman Catholics. The local warders are not employed over the invalid convicts.
