HC Deb 26 May 1884 vol 288 c1315
MR. WHITLEY

asked Mr. Attorney General, If it is true, as stated in a paragraph in The Daily News of Friday, May the 23rd, That the proposed re-arrangement of As-size Courts, suggested by a Committee of Judges, had been abandoned in deference to strong objections which had been raised in many parts of England and Wales, and that the Judicial Bench will be strengthened so as to meet the difficulty arising from the present condition of overwork of the Judges?

THE ATTORNEY GENERAL (Sir HENRY JAMES)

, in reply, said, it was correct that representations had been received objecting to the removal of the Assizes from different counties. Full attention had been given to those representations; but it was not correct to say that any scheme had been abandoned. No scheme had been prepared. There was no intention of increasing the number of Judges.
