HC Deb 02 July 1883 vol 281 c36
MR. COMPTON LAWRANCE

asked the Under Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Whether the attention of Her Majesty's Government has been directed to a letter from Rear Admiral Garcia y Garcia, in the "Times" of June 27th, containing a copy of the bases of a treaty between Chili and Peru, by which it is proposed to cede to Chili all deposits of guano except those actually being worked at the present time; and, whether Her Majesty's Government is aware that all deposits of guano are mortgaged to the Peruvian bondholders, and whether it is intended to take any steps to protect the interest of British subjects?

LORD EDMOND FITZMAURICE

Sir, Her Majesty's Government have received no official information of the conclusion of a Treaty between Chili and Peru; and until they have received such information it will be premature to say what steps, if any, they may be called on to take.
