HC Deb 06 November 1882 vol 274 cc850-1
MR. BIGGAR

asked the Chief Secretary to the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland Whether his attention has been drawn to a letter published in the "Belfast Daily News," of 1st instant, and signed by C. E. Greene, P.L.G., in which it is stated that a lunatic woman named Malcolmson, who had resided twenty-five years in Scotland, had been removed from a lunatic asylum at Bothwell to Downpatrick Workhouse; also of a letter from the Parochial Board Office, Cambuslang, denying the truth of Mr. Greene's statement; and, whether he will inquire into the case; and, if the letter of the Downpatrick Guardian is correct, he will use the proper means to prevent the recurrence of such an outrage?

MR. TREVELYAN

The attention of the Local Government Board had already been directed by the Guardians of the Downpatrick Union to the removal of Agnes Malcolmson from Scotland to their Union; but they made no complaints as to the alleged ill-treatment of the poor woman by the female warders. The Local Government Board will now make inquiries on this point, and I will let the hon. Member know the result.
