HC Deb 06 November 1882 vol 274 c850
MR. BIGGAR

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department, Whether he is aware that, in the case of Genge v. Symes, tried at Bridport on 25th September, and in which defendant was fined £5 for alleged breach of contract in absenting himself from his work, there was a complaint that the first breach was committed by the complainant in not supplying a suitable cottage, in accordance with the agreement; and, whether, under the circumstances, he will, if he has the power to do so, remit the fine; and, if he has not the power, that he will use his influence with the magistrates who tried the case to remit the fine?

SIR WILLIAM HARCOURT,

in reply, said, the case was that of a breach of a civil contract, and, therefore, one in which he had no authority to interfere.
