§ MR. CODDINGTONasked the First Lord of the Treasury, Whether the Commission on the Channel Tunnel question is to include any representatives of the commercial and carrying trade of this Country?
MR. GLADSTONESir, there is no Representative of the commercial and carrying trade of the country on this Committee—for it is a Committee, and not a Commission, which has been appointed, not, as I think the Question 1949 seems to imply, for the purpose of making a general investigation into the subject of the Channel Tunnel and reporting on the merits generally, but only to examine into and report upon a single and isolated, although very important, part of it. There is, therefore, no prejudice in consequence of the appointment of this Committee to any other form or description of inquiry.
