HC Deb 10 August 1882 vol 273 c1362
MR. HEALY

asked the Chief Secretary to the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, Whether it is the fact that, on the 4th July, a charge of larceny was preferred at the Thomastown (Kilkenny) Petty Sessions by Sub - Constable Golden against Sub-Constable Teskey; whether the latter was charged with, breaking into the box of the prosecutor on several occasions, and extracting various sums of money therefrom; whether this charge was substantiated in the strongest manner by certain marked coins, which were found in possession of the defendant by the head - constable in charge of the station; whether, notwithstanding this, the Bench of Magistrates dismissed the case, and refused to return Sub-Constable Teskey for trial; and, whether he approves of the action of the magistrates?

MR. TREVELYAN

The facts of the case appear to be stated with accuracy in the Question. The case was investigated by three magistrates, who acquitted Sub-Constable Teskey, and stated that he left the Court without a stain on his character. The Inspector General informs me that he is a man of good character, with nearly 22 years' service. I see no reason for reviewing the action of the magistrates.
