HC Deb 07 August 1882 vol 273 c965
MR. EDWARD CLARKE

asked the Secretary to the Treasury, Whether the petition of the outport outdoor officers of Her Majesty's Customs has been considered; and, whether the Lords of the Treasury will take into consideration the period of service of outdoor officers of from ten to thirty years' standing, who are only in receipt of £66 10s. per annum, whereas boatmen of less than 10 years' service are receiving £70 per annum?

MR. COURTNEY

The Board of Customs have not recommended any modification in the new scale for Customs' out-door officers, and the Treasury have no reason for thinking that any change is required. I cannot admit comparisons between the rate of promotion in different branches of the Service, such as that suggested in the latter part of the Question.
