HC Deb 04 April 1882 vol 268 c676
SIR H. DRUMMOND WOLFF

asked the Secretary to the Admiralty, Why the workmen who were employed from half-past one and three o'clock in the morning in preparing for the launch of the "Colossus" were not paid overtime in accordance with custom; and, whether the Admiralty considers that an allowance of only the same time as was worked during the nights in question is fair to the men concerned?

MR. TREVELYAN

Sir, the time given in lieu of extra time worked at night exceeds the actual time worked by one-third. That is the rule, and it, no doubt, was observed on this occasion; and, if it was not, I will see that it is made up. These details are in the hands of the Admiral Superintendent; but if the matter had been referred to the Admiralty, the Board would not have refused the payment of the work in money instead of in time.
