§ MR. A. MOOREasked the First Lord of the Treasury, Whether his attention has been called to the difficulties which beset labourers in endeavouring to avail themselves of the provisions of the Land Act; and, whether the Government will consider during the Recess what steps may be taken to render the Act more accessible to the deserving class?
MR. GLADSTONESir, my attention has been called to the subject, particularly by my hon. Friend the Member for County Cork (Mr. Shaw), of the difficulties of the labourers in certain districts of Ireland, and after considering during the Recess what steps could be taken, I have only to say that I have no reason to despair of the subject. It is possible that the Act may be improved; but I am not able to say that we have in our minds any exact plan for that purpose. Any suggestion tendered by my hon. Friend, or any other person acquainted with the position of the labourers, will receive our careful attention.
