§ SIR MICHAEL HICKS-BEACHI beg to give Notice that on an early day 1036 after Easter I shall move the following Resolution:—
That, in the opinion of this House, the course pursued by Tier Majesty's Government with respect to the rising in the Transvaal, so far as it has yet been explained to Parliament, has resulted in the loss of valuable lives without vindicating the authority of the Crown, is fraught with danger to the future tranquillity and safety of Her Majesty's dominions in South Africa, and fails to provide for the fulfilment of the obligations contracted by this Country towards the European settlers and native population of the Transvaal. On the first day after Easter on which the House meets I shall ask the right hon. Gentleman at the head of the Government what facilities he can afford for the discussion of that Motion.
MR. GLADSTONEIn the present state of Public Business, without at all declining to take some measures for affording facilities, I certainly feel quite justified in asking the right hon. Gentleman to consult those among whom he sits in order to see whether it would be possible for him, as an independent Member, to find some facilities for himself.
§ SIR MICHAEL HICKS-BEACHI would beg to remind the right hon. Gentleman that all discussion has been postponed twice on the distinct understanding that an opportunity would be provided.
§ SIR WILFRID LAWSONWith reference to the Notice which has just been given, I beg to give Notice that I will move the following Amendment:—
That this House, believing that a prolongation of the struggle with the Doers would have promoted neither the honour nor the interest of this Country, views with satisfaction the peaceful arrangement of the Transvaal difficulty which has been arrived at by Her Majesty's Government.
