HC Deb 29 June 1880 vol 253 c1122
MR. THORNHILL

asked the Secretary of State for War, Why Surgeon Majors of Household Cavalry are compelled to retire at the age of fifty-five without further promotion, whereas in other branches of the service Surgeon Majors, at and after the age of fifty-five, can attain higher rank, and their compulsory retirement does not occur till the age of sixty?

MR. CHILDERS

Sir, the hon. Member must be under some misapprehension. Surgeon Majors in every branch of the Service are compulsorily retired at the age of 55.
