HC Deb 31 March 1879 vol 245 cc12-3
MR. ONSLOW

asked Mr. Chancellor of the Exchequer, Whether he can now, or on some day before the Easter recess, conveniently state to the House the present position of our negotiations with the authorities in Afghanistan; and, whether it is true that an advance has been ordered to Cabul?

THE CHANCELLOR OF THE EXCHEQUER

Sir, our communications with the authorities in Afghanistan are not in such a state at the present moment as to render it possible for us to bring the subject forward for discussion. It is a mistake to infer that because Major Cavagnari has returned from Cabul communications are broken off; that is not the case. Our Native Agent is there, and communications are still expected from Cabul. We have no information that any advance has been ordered.
