HC Deb 07 April 1879 vol 245 cc445-6
MR. KAVANAGH

asked the Chief Secretary for Ireland, Whether, having regard to the fact that when Clause 8 (called the finance clause) of the Intermediate Education (Ireland) Act of 1878 was drawn it was only intended that the Act should apply to boys, and that whereas, by a subsequent Amendment, its advantages were extended to girls, Her Majesty's Government are prepared to make such further financial provisions as may be found necessary to enable the Commissioners to give full effect to its provisions for the benefit of both classes?

MR. J. LOWTHER

The Act to which the hon. Member refers has hardly got into working order, and it would be rather premature to anticipate the probability of a communication from the Commissioners with respect to an increase of the money at their disposal; but should the Commissioners consider that additional finance provisions are necessary, and apply to the Government on the subject, their suggestion will, of course, receive every consideration.
