HC Deb 23 April 1877 vol 233 c1672
MAJOR BEAUMONT

asked the Secretary to the Board of Trade, If he will state what steps the Government proposes to take with reference to the Bills of three Tramway Companies, the consideration of which was postponed until the report of the late Committee on the application of mechanical power had been made?

SIR CHARLES ADDERLEY

Sir, I propose to introduce a short Bill giving effect to one of the recommendations of the Select Committee on the use of mechanical power upon tramways, enabling the Board of Trade to authorize the use of steam on tramways, under certain conditions, for experiment, during the ensuing year. In this Bill I also propose to schedule the Bills and Provisional Orders of this Session which apply for steam power, and which have been postponed pending the Report of the Committee, so that they may be taken up next Session, without additional expense, but specially subject to any conditions which Parliament may in the meantime impose.
