HC Deb 03 May 1875 vol 223 cc1953-4
ADMIRAL EGERTON

asked the First Lord of the Admiralty, Whether he is aware that the general Turnpike Acts have been so construed as to prevent officers of the Royal Navy serving in the coastguard, when on duty and in uniform, from sharing in the exemption from payment of tolls enjoyed by officers and soldiers of the Army; and whether, if that construction is correct, he will consider their case with a view to granting them some compensation for the expenses incurred in visiting their stations?

MR. HUNT

, in reply, said, there was, he believed, no doubt that officers of the Royal Navy serving in the Coast Guard were not included in the exemptions of the Acts referred to. The Admiralty had been advised that they were, on other grounds, exempt from payment of tolls when on duty, but that view was not always taken by toll-keepers. No legal decision on the subject had as yet been obtained; but meanwhile, if they were obliged to pay tolls, they might charge the money in their contingencies accounts.
