HC Deb 08 April 1875 vol 223 c501
MR. PLIMSOLL

asked the President of the Board of Trade, At whose instance Board of Trade inquiries as to the seaworthiness of merchant ships are or have been held, say upon the last twenty cases: if on the motion of the department itself, upon what principle of selection they proceed; if upon requisitions from outside, then upon whose requests in those instances?

SIR CHARLES ADDERLEY

Sir, there is an ambiguity about the Question, whether it refers to Surveyors' Reports of unseaworthy ships or inquiries into wrecks. Whichever is meant it would be better answered by an actual Return, which, if the hon. Member will move for unopposed, I will take care shall be immediately presented to the House. It would be difficult to give such information in the form of an Answer to a Question.
