HC Deb 13 July 1874 vol 220 cc1519-20
MR. RITCHIE

asked Mr. Chancellor of the Exchequer, If he can give any information as to the actual intentions of the French Government with reference to the complete execution of the Sugar Convention of 1864; and, whether the system of refining in bond is likely to be introduced this season into French sugar refineries?

THE CHANCELLOR OF THE EXCHEQUER

, in reply, said, there had been a good deal of Correspondence on the subject, both public and private, and the latest information he had was, that no answer had yet been received to the last representations made to the French Government with respect to the non-execution of the Sugar Convention of 1864. Her Majesty's Government, however, understood that regulations were being framed for the purpose of refining in bond in the French sugar refineries, but it was not stated when the system was to come into operation.
