HC Deb 13 July 1874 vol 220 c1520
MR. ROWLEY HILL

asked the President of the Local Government Board, Whether it is probable that be will be able to bring in a Bill, during the present Session, to give effect to the recommendations contained in the Report of the Committee on Adulteration of Food?

MR. SCLATER-BOOTH

Sir, when I moved, in the early part of the Session, for a Select Committee on the working of the Adulteration of Food Acts, I expressed an earnest hope that the Committee might be able so to restrict the number of witnesses to be examined, that it might be possible to legislate on the subject this year, if legislation were found to be necessary. As the hon. Gentleman is aware, that restriction was not found to be practicable, and the Report of the Committee has only been in our hands within the last few days, it must be obvious, therefore, that it would be quite impossible for me to make any proposal on a matter of so much difficulty and interest in the limited time now available.
