§ MR. C. S. READasked Mr. Chancellor of the Exchequer, If he will be good enough to state whether the Malt Duty is levied on the quantity of barley steeped or on the quantity of malt produced?
§ THE CHANCELLOR OF THE EXCHEQUER, in reply, said, the duty was levied on the quantity of malt, and the quality was arrived at by a presumption derived from barley. It was presumed that 100 bushels on the couch yielded 81½ bushels of malt, and the duty was imposed accordingly.
§ MR. C. S. READasked whether, if the quantity of malt was not in proportion to what had been charged, the maltster would not be allowed the overcharge?
