HUBBARDsaid, he wished to ask the Under Secretary of State for the Colonies, Whether there be in the Colonial Office the Copy of any Despatch transmitted to Natal which could justify the report "That a Despatch had been received from Mr. Cardwell, ordering all Government Officers to recognize, aid, and support Dr. Colenso as Bishop of Natal?"
§ MR. ADDERLEYI do not believe, Sir, there is any confirmation of the report to which the hon. Gentleman alludes. The late Secretary for the Colonies has requested me to say that he has no recollection whatever of having sent out such a despatch as the hon. Gentleman mentions, and, after the most careful search at the Colonial Office, I can find no trace of any such document.
