HC Deb 19 February 1864 vol 173 c798
MR. AYTOUN

said, he wished to offer an explanation with reference to an expression which fell from him in the course of the debate on the Motion of his hon. Friend the Member for Maidstone (Mr. Buxton), on the subject of the attack on Kagosima. Speaking of an affair in which Mr. Moss was concerned, he had used the word "crime" with reference to his conduct. He had since received a letter from that gentleman stating, that in the course of the affair spoken of the gun had been discharged accidentally, and not by orders. He therefore regretted having made use of the above expression.

MR. AYTOUN

said, he would beg to ask, If the Government will lay on the table the Papers relating to the case of Mr. Moss, in Japan?

MR. LAYARD

, in reply, said, there was no objection to produce the Papers, except that they were utterly useless, and would put the country to a large expense. He could not conscientiously do it, unless the hon. Gentleman prevailed upon the House to consent to a Motion for their production.
